Location-based Search Results on ni.com Search.

Posted by KennN on Dec 1, 2008 9:17:44 AM

screenshot1.pngBuiliding on the previous post from Dillon.  We'd like to announce that the Search Team has rolled out some location-based functionality to NI.com search.

The search index has content from many languages.  We wanted to highlight this fact with little effort from the user, as currently NI.com only officially supports 9 languages.  So based on your IP address location we have provided a way to search in your native language.  You can even limit your results to certain languages, In addition, your native, or selected, language will be given higher priority in the search results above it's English counterparts.

We are always looking at ways to making searching content on NI.com easier so please go try this new feature and tell us what you think. We do not yet have content in ALL languages, but as we do we will roll out support for those languages.

That's great. I don't see NI creating Hebrew content any time soon, but having localized content often makes things much easier, especially if you're having trouble and trying to solve something.

P.S. Since you're the NI web team, here's some feedback:

  1. For some reason I wasn't logged in automatically and had to log in using my username and password, even though I was already logged into the forums in this browser session.
  2. You might wish to add a "you need to log in to comment" line in the comments section, as it took me a minute to figure out how to comment.

P.S. After looking around a bit, it looks like I do have an email subscription for this item now, so you might want to add a message saying "you will now receive email notification for further replies" or something along those lines.

And another thing, I just edited the comment above and it disappeared. There was a message saying that an admin will have to approve it before it's posted, but that message appeared ABOVE the blog post, not in the comments section, which is where my focus was.

And one last thing (hopefully) - the locale (or at least the timezone) doesn't seem to be recognized automatically by the IP address. It's probably not critical, since it's a one time deal, but I was surprised to see that I posted 8 hours behind my actual time zone.

And one (really?) last thing - the date display is screwed up in the Hebrew locale, but it's hard to display numbers and Hebrew text together without messing it up.

Great feedback tst - thanks!

Regarding your first comment:

  • Was it your first time logging into the new community specifically (not discussion forums)?
  • If so, that would explain the behavior - basically there's a distinct imprint for the community application which needs to be created the first time you login.
  • Now that this has clearly happened, do you have to login after having already signed in to forums or ni.com?

Regarding your second comment:

  • I observe the same behavior, and after refreshing it appears.  Attempted to mod a comments setting but that didn't do the trick.
  • Do you see the same behavior on refresh?  It appears immediately?
  • Will look into this!

Regarding your third comment:

  • Will look into this as well!

Thanks again!

It was the first time logging into this part of the site, but I also opened a new browser window now and logged in through the forums. This did log me into ni.com (e.g. myNI), but did not log me into this section and I had to give the username and password again. Note that the "prompt me..." checkbox is unchecked.

Regarding the refresh, I didn't try that, but the first (edited) comment did appear immediately after I posted the second comment.

Got it!

I've doc'd these items internally and will take up with our web dev team.

I've specifically included comments with a link back to this post so we can update with progress!

Thanks again - hope we can report back soon

This is great news, we had so many bad feedback because we were not able to find localized results in the SERP.

I will forward this post to my colleague here in France, thanks for the great job.

So, any news on the login issue? It's still quite annoying having to manually log in each time.

For the forums, I have a URL which does the automatic login based on the cookie. Maybe there's something similar I can use for the community section?

Dec 23, 2008 3:11 PM JLS JLS    says in response to tst:

Hey tst,

I agree it's inconvenient to have to login so frequently.  Basically our community application has a concept of being "securely logged in" - just uses cookes which have values that are based on sessions on the server.  Hence, when those sessions expire on the server, the cookie isn't valid when you later return.

We're looking into how we can get around this.  There are security issues in play here (for community users), but we're pushing from a business perspective to find a way to remove this inconvenience.

Definitely keep us informed of all workflow inconveniences etc. - we really want to make the experience in community as easy and user-friendly as possible... so if you don't like something, we sincerely want to know about it, and very much appreciate any and all comments, thoughts, etc!

Thanks again!

Have an update on the timezones item.  Auto-detecting by IP address would be nice, but it appears our only option is in the User Preferences (see Your Stuff -> Preferences in the main user bar when logged in).  There's a timezone setting there which should help.  Please let me know if this helps - we're still addressing the other items noted in this thread - thanks for all the great feedback everyone!  And keep it coming!

Yes, I changed that when I originally noticed this. As mentioned, the main issue is the automatic login issue.
