Readme for NI FIRST Community search plugin.
Hello, I've come to realize that accessing the NI FIRST Community forum can really be beneficial and
helpful to FIRST teams and mentors. However it seemed that a nice Firefox search engine plug-in that
only searches the NI FIRST Community forum, could really speed up search time for someone looking
for topics that may have been discussed already.
Such a search plug-in did not exist already, so I decided to make one. For those of you who use Firefox,
I hope you all get useful use out of it.
I have created two different versions. I don't know which one is better. I am still new to creating these
search plugins.
1. The first one is called “nifirst.xml” and is probably the easier one, since the icon is self
contained in the code.
2. The second one consists of two files “nifrc.src” and “nifrc.gif”. This one I created first, and
seems to do the exact same function as the .xml file, so pick whichever one you want.
Either version needs to be copied to the the appropriate firefox "searchplugins" folder.
I use use Ubuntu Linux, so if you are using Linux, this file and it's icon should be placed in the /usr/lib/
firefox-3.0.5/searchplugins folder. Alternativley there is also a .mozilla folder hidden in your home
directory, and you will also find a "searchplugins" within it as well. Either should work.
If using Windows you will have to find the "searchplugins" folder yourself. I think it either might be
located in the Firefox folder within Program Files, or within the hidden Firefox profile in Documents
and Settings.
If you are using Mac OS X, then I have no idea. This should work if you can find your "searchplugins"
folder for firefox, but it might be different I don't know. I n therory it should work fine if your Firefox
can find it.
Once installed you should find it in the top right corner of firefox where your other search engines are.
The ones like Google, Ask.com, Amazon, and Wikipedia. It should now be among them.
