Magic 8-ball mounting would be more accurate. (to NI Support, not to this thing)

 

The hole is unrelated. I set it on this granite block for the pictures.

Well at least it seems to turn around.

If it turns and you drop some material into it it will spread out....   sugar, salt, sand (probably not), ...

Since it looks like a large version of the polisihing mandrel used by dentists, the polishing theory seems valid.

Where a mandrel that large would used exscapes me.
