quick drop shortcut context help

Status: New

Re-opening due to the discontinuation of NXG. Note that LabVIEW 2016 and later includes default Quick Drop object shortcuts, so this idea is now generally useful for any given LabVIEW installation.

I think it would help the process of learning Quick Drop shortcuts if the Context Help window contained the shortcut for the item.

I know that I can define the shortcuts and that I can look at them from the Quick Drop dialog.

I like this idea, but it brings to mind an important question. Currently, NI does not ship any object name shortcuts with LabVIEW...you have to add them yourself. I have often pointed people to my Quick Drop Palette Object Shortcuts for Right-Handed Developers document, but this is something that must be done manually, has been tailored to my preferences specifically, and is not immediately available to everybody. Nevertheless, I've been told by many developers that they have found these shortcuts very useful.

Should NI install a pre-defined (but customizable) set of Quick Drop object name shortcuts with LabVIEW? If we did, I think this idea would have much more value.

Great idea, but did not liked so much the proposed way (color, box around, "QD") to show in the Context Help. Kudos anyway!

Darren - I like the idea of a pre-defined set of shortcuts.  Sounds like another Idea Exchange submission.

Manzolli - certainly the red box was only to get the idea across.  I happily leave beautification to people with style and flair.  🙂

I kind of like being reminded of what my shortcuts are.  And it is also good to help other people I work with to learn the shortcuts I force upon them.

Make the other idea about default shortcuts and let the fireworks fly as people argue about what they should be.

Because these shortcuts are user customizable, shouldn't the implementation include a runtime check of existing shortcuts?  When the context help window queries a .vi's documentation it also checks if the .vi has a Quick Drop shortcut and displays whatever shortcuts are configured for it.  (Multiple shortcuts are allowed...)

Darren suggests adding default Quick Drop shortcuts to LV 2016 here - https://decibel.ni.com/content/message/114802?tstart=0#114802

Available in LabVIEW NXG. When typing in the search window after pressing Ctrl-Space, the object shortcuts for any objects returned in the search results will be displayed.

NXG is dead - we need this in LabVIEW.
