Ed DeWitt gave a presentation in May, 2012 to the SAE Heavy Truck Handling, Dynamics, and Control Symposium in Greenville, SC, concerning some testing he did on a heavy truck.  Some of the key ideas were as follows:

  • The vehicle was instrumented to monitor component loads, temperatures, and various data coming from the vehicle’s internal Controller Area Network (CAN) bus.
  • LabVIEW (www.ni.com/labview) was used to create a program which helped determine starting and ending locations for the vehicle based on the USGS listed of populated places (http://geonames.usgs.gov/domestic/download_data.htm)
  • DIAdem (www.ni.com/diadem) was used for the data analysis.  DIAdem’s capability to synchronize data with GPS information was extremely helpful in the analysis, as it allowed the vehicle’s movements to be “played back” while seeing how those movements effected the data.
