Description
In electronics, noise is defined as an undesired electrical signal. While noise is considered undesirable in many cases, noise actually can be useful and allow you to characterize systems. Because white random noise has an inherently flat frequency spectrum, you can use white random noise to characterize the frequency response of systems such as filters. You also can use artificially created noise to characterize systems. Artificially created noise often is based on random number generators created with an algorithm whose output repeats only after a significantly large number of samples. Each output sample is approximately statistically independent. The algorithms used to generate random numbers often are based on a seed value that specifies the starting point of the algorithm. Modern random number generators can produce sequences that repeat only after 2^(19937)-1 samples. This generator is a simple tool to help you visualize and analyze a circuit with a noisy input signal. It'll let you select the filter specification that you want with a low or high cutoff frequency, the type of noise you want to use, the order, density, and standard deviation, among many other options (read this article for more background information on different noise signals).
