Lab Administrators Guide

Overview:

This guide is to assist Lab Administrators in setting up the NI myRIO in a university setting.

During installation:

Complete the following steps to install the LabVIEW for myRIO Module on a development computer.

  1. Log in to the development computer as an administrator or as a user with administrative privileges.
  2. Insert the NI myRIO Software Suite DVD 1.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to install and activate the myRIO Module.

Installing the USBLAN Driver in Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Server 2003

You must manually install the USBLAN driver before using the NI myRIO with Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Complete the following steps to install the USBLAN driver:

Note Before completing the following steps, make sure that you have downloaded and installed the KB 931125 package from Microsoft. For more information, refer to the Workarounds and Recommendations section of KB 65O8AH55, Why Are National Instruments Installers Failing on Windows XP and Server 2003 Machines?

  1. Connect the NI myRIO to your computer after you install the LabVIEW for myRIO Module.
  2. In the Found New Hardware Wizard, select No, not this time and click Next.
  3. Select Install from a list or specific location and click Next.
  4. Select Include this location in the search and navigate to the National Instruments\CompactRIO\Staging\USBLAN\XP directory.
  5. Click Next to install the USBLAN driver. Click Continue Anyway when you see the Windows Logo testing warning.
  6. Click Finish.

The USBLAN device driver should now appear under Network adapters in the Windows Device Manager.

Post installation:

Exceptions need to be created in the Windows firewall for NI myRIO installed components:

  1. Getting Started Wizard
  2. LabVIEW
  3. Measurement & Automation Explorer

Without these exceptions, the user will see dialogs to unblock these applications. They will however not be able to unblock these applications without administrator privileges. Exceptions can be created by going to Control Panel >> System and Security >>Windows Firewall. Click on the Allow a program through Windows Firewall link on the left blue pane. Click on the Change Settings button, if this is already greyed out, it has already been clicked on. Click on Allow another program buttnm at the bottom. If the program is not listed, click Browse. You can now use the file paths below to add exceptions for the three programs:

<program files>\National Instruments\MAX\NIMax.exe

<program files>\National Instruments\<labview>\labview.exe

<program files>\National Instruments\<labview>\resource\myRIO\Getting Started with NI myRIO.exe

NI myRIO Setup Notes:

To setup the NI myRIO Hardware follow the Getting Started Wizard after plugging the NI myRIO in via USB or use Measurement & Automation Explorer.

In the Getting Started Wizard you will be able to:

  1. Install all necessary target software to the NI myRIO hardware
  2. Set date/time on the NI myRIO

Wireless with enterprise security setup:

For connecting to university wireless networks, Lab Administrators should provide this information to users or should set the network up themselves.

They will need this information for the Network Settings tab in Measurement & Automation Explorer as seen below:

WIFI Tab.PNG

  1. EAP type for the network
  2. Necessary certificates necessary for connecting to network and instructions for uploading them
  3. User account credentials for connecting to a network are stored on the myRIO target. To avoid potential security issues, Lab Administrators should
    1. Option 1: Create a new, shared user account and password for the entire lab/class to use to connect to secure wireless networks
    2. Option 2: Recommend that all users use their own credentials but
      • i. Set a password on the admin account to prevent hacking
      • ii. "Forget" the wireless network after the user is done with the myRIO target
      • iii. Reset the admin password to blank

Factory reset of myRIO hardware:

NOTE Please make sure users are aware they cannot reset the credentials with the reset button. They need to keep track of this information on their own.

In case of targets in a bad state or targets with unknown admin passwords, the Lab Administrator can provide a recovery disk to enable a factory reset. In order to create this disk for a factory reset,

please contact NI for the necessary files to Reset the Administrator Password or for Recovery Mode.

Hi,

I have forgotten the login password of myRIO. How could I reset it? Or, how could I force to reset myRIO to factory configuration?

Thanks a lot.

Giovanni
