NI VLM 3.0 Feature Preview - New User Interface and Searching

The first thing you will notice about NI VLM 3.0 is the new user interface. It has a completely different look and format than previous versions of NI VLM and is designed to be easier to use and customize for your needs, saving you valuable time. The new user interface is more logically separated and intuitive to use. It also allows for new functionality like improved search, sorting, and other new features of NI VLM 3.0 that will be discussed in more detail in later posts.

A navigation bar on the left contains links to views and actions you can use to manage your VLA. A selected view displays all the information pertaining to that view on a single screen, including the actions you can take within that view. In most cases, each line of the summary can be expanded to get even more information.

In Figure 1 is an example of the new user interface with Users selected from the navigation bar. The summary of the users is shown in the main window. Under the Users navigation selection you can take the actions of adding, editing, deleting, disconnecting, reconnecting, and creating home licenses for each user. The actions are allowed or grayed out depending on what information is selected in the summary. For example, if you don’t select a user, all the actions except Add User will be grayed out and cannot be clicked on. Once you select a user, more actions become available to you. Each user can be expanded for more information. For each user, you can see which licenses they have permission for and the source of the licenses.

Figure 1. NI VLM 3.0 User Interface Overview

The new NI VLM 3.0 user interface opens up the option for new search capabilities. You can easily search, sort, and filter by a single or multiple columns. The column categories are preselected, but you can customize which columns are shown in the view by removing or adding columns, as well as easily dragging them to a different order. Figure 2 shows the quick searching and advanced filtering interface.

If you prefer a different dimension, you can drag a column header and group by that column. Arrange each Navigation Bar selection to your optimal view and NI VLM 3.0 will remember the setup each time you go back to the selection or relaunch NI VLM.

In Figure 3 you can see how you can change the Users view to see all the developers in each department, their contact information, and their license permissions. This might be something that you look at on a daily basis or you can use this view at renewal time to see which departments are using which licenses.
