June 23rd, what are you presenting?

Hello all,

We have picked a date for our next Architects’ forum.

date: THURSDAY JUNE 23rd

where: somewhere at NI Headquarters (I'll update this line with a room as soon as we get one)

time: 6:00 PM

So far Norm has volunteer to present. His presentation is called: "LabVIEW Sessions and The Death of LV2 Style Globals"

Allen, Aaron and I have things we can present. We would like for other members in the community to present. Of course, if you insist, we will present again

Remember the presentations are 10 – 20 minutes.

Do we have any takers? Is there anyone out there that wants to present on LVOOP? What other topics would you like to here about?

Thanks,

Fab

What aspect of LVOOP do you want someone to cover in 10-20 minutes?

David,

And there is the challenge

I don't think all the CLAs know LVOOP. Some have heard of it, others have seen it a couple of times, others love it.

One of the biggest advantages I see is dynamic dispatch. A quick example showing an array of objects of different type, but of the same family, and then adding another one without stopping the VI normally brings the point home. An example like that should not take more than 10 minutes. That was enough to get me interested the first time in learning more about LVOOP.

That is one idea. What do you think?

Well Norm's presentation will lean heavily on dynamic dispatching, so you're covered. 😄

LVOOP is a tool, and introducing it first requires introducing the OO approach to programming, which requires reading a book. A catchy demo could be shown in a 10-minute span if you just want to get someone's attention, but there's almost no chance you'll be able to explain how it works to someone who doesn't already know.

Who in this group isn't already using OO design? Depending on what they do, they may have very good reason not to. For example, LVRT programmers have little use for dynamic dispatching, which often serves to fragment memory and slow down performance. (It can still be applied, but extra care has to be taken and may not be worth the effort.)

David,

The idea of the Architects Forum is to discuss advanced topics. We have said since the beginning that this is a forum for people who " are willing to play in the deep end of the pool". The emphasis is in "willing". That means that sometimes the topics might be too advanced and the attendees will have to go do more research on their own afterwards. We wanted to have a forum where we could skip the : " this is dataflow" , "this is an object", "the data is on the wire", etc before we could get into the meat of the discussion. The idea of having the presentations be 20 minutes or so is to leave room for discussion.

We would love to have you present, what would you want to talk about?

Thanks,

Fab

I agree with the group's mission. I was just curious what the purpose of presenting an OO demonstration would be, so I could decide whether I think such a demo will be effective at achieving that purpose. If the point is to grab the attention of an attendee who hasn't yet considered OO, then I think it would be effective in a 10-20 minute span.

Since I haven't yet attended a meeting, what's the format? It seems like you plan to have several 10-20 minute presentations each time. Are there themes for each gathering, or can the presentations be on any topic? I'm not sure that I have anything OO-centric to show, but I might have some other side projects I'd like to show off and gather feedback on.

I started a document for the next meeting: http://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-16002

There seems to be a lot of interest on doing a Software Testing day, the agenda for next meeting is still work in progress. So if you are interested in presenting, please let me know.

Thanks,

Fab
