Installing Python

This isn't the first time we've heard of people hitting this problem, both in the last couple of weeks. I'm not sure if something has changed (related to download.ni.com's Akamai-zation?) to make this more likely, or if we're just seeing a more diverse set of configurations among people who try it. I'll see if NI's IT folks know of anything they can do to make this less likely. On the other hand, at this point of this feature, we're really focusing on "making the impossible, possible" -- we'll get to "making the possible, easier" as soon as we can, but I don't think we should make any promises about when. (Especially since it's possible it can't be fixed at NI's end. The other user I saw who reported this couldn't "wget http://google.com/robots.txt" either. It could be the best we can do is add an FAQ with Brad's steps and/or steps for replicating download.ni.com on your own server.)

I haven't tried installing it manually yet like you described above, but it seems like a pretty annoying process.

I totally agree with you, hence the sound of disgustration in my voice (can't you hear it in the text?) We'll see if there's something we can do on our end, but as Scot noted, we may simply have to put together a whitepaper describing the issues and possible workarounds.
