Video: Intel NI CompactRIO Synchrophasor Intelligent Systems Framework

The smart grid is constantly evolving. That presents a huge challenge for utilities, who also must evolve to stay in control of their operations.

New solutions are necessary and intelligent systems are the foundations on which these solutions can be built. For example, phasor measurement units, commonly known as PMUs, have become a critical component for managing the smart grid, enabling utilities to more intelligently control and protect the grid.

Now utilities can move beyond PMUs to increasingly intelligent synchrophasor solutions for both transmission and distribution. To enable this type of evolution, Intel consulted with industry leading OEMs, ISVs, and integrators to develop the Intel(R) Intelligent Systems Framework-- a set of interoperable capabilities that can help utilities better connect, manage and secure intelligent devices.

Let's take a look at a best of breed synchrophasor solution based on the Intel(R) Intelligent Systems Framework. The solution starts with data acquisition enabled by National Instruments PMUs. Fully programmable and scalable, they can interface with switch and sensor hardware from a wide variety of vendors. In addition, National Instruments PMUs can be updated while deployed on the grid to add new communication protocols or more advanced analysis-- and they're powered by high performance multi-core Intel Core i7 processors, enabling utilities to easily handle acquisition of many types of data on a single device.

PMU data acquired by National Instruments synchrophasors is passed to centralized servers provided by Dell. Dell provisions a complete high performance computing, networking and storage platform-- including three tiers of scalable storage. Dell PowerEdge servers equipped with Intel Xeon processors deliver data in near real-time to grid operators.

The next step is big data analysis. OSIsoft PI system provides advanced visualization and analytics, enabling utilities to truly understand what's going on throughout the grid network. OSIsoft's PI system early warning capabilities help operators react to problems quickly. Plus, utilities can be confident their data is highly secure because the PI System helps meet strict NERC CIP requirements.

That's a quick look at an advanced synchrophasor solution-- an end-to-end implementation that can handle vast amounts of data, that's validated and tested for reliability, that's remotely manageable, and that's built cost effectively from standards-based components.

No one is better equipped to meet today's challenges than the industry leaders who build their solutions on the Intel architecture. The Intel Intelligent Systems Framework provides a solid foundation for solutions that help utilities turn data into improved services and increased revenue.
