Just a thought, but if you don't have a spare computer sitting around, a small ARM based board might do the trick.  You will not have the RAM for doing major work, but should be good for hosting a small site and setting up a repo:

The Cubiboard has an octa-core CPU and 2 Gb of RAM while the Banana Pi has a dual-core with 1 Gb.  The Banana Pi might be more straight-forward to setup as there are Ubuntu, Debian and other OS images available while the Cubietruck seems more mixed.  Raspberry Pi distros still seem kind of limited.

That's a great idea.  The downside is I'm not sure you could just use on of the out of the box preconfigured turnkey appliances.  You would have to do a lot of the configuration yourself.   It's definitely doable though.

So basically a banana pi runs standard ubuntu/debian out of the box - that is pretty cool.

On a similar note, here is a vpn solution for a rapsberry pi. http://www.pivpn.io

I also saw this: http://www.instructables.com/id/Ultimate-Pi-Based-Home-Server/

So definitely worth thinking about.  Probably use a lot less power than a standard computer as well.
