Move Terminal Labels Behaviour

Hi Darren

This is a feature I have been interested in for a while. It is a slight modification of the Move Terminal Labels QDP.

Currently any Terminal in a Structure does not get aligned. Additionally if I select only one Terminal, all Terminals are acted on.

I was thinking the default behaviour could stay the same however, now if a terminal(s) is selected then it will be acted on whether it is inside a structure or not and only that terminal is acted on.

I think this would be a cool enhancement - do you agree?

Additionally it would be nice if control references were acted upon as well?

I like the idea of operating on the selected terminals.  I also like the idea of operating on control references.  And we also have the Shift modifier, which is currently not being used in this plugin.  And we even have the option of taking what is currently typed in the combo box and applying that information somehow.  Here's a proposition for how this plugin could work in 2012:

  • Ctrl-T - Move labels of top-level diagram terminals (exactly the same functionality as today)
  • Ctrl-Shift-T - Move labels of all diagram terminals, which includes those in nested diagrams
  • Type 'ref', then Ctrl-T - Move labels of top-level diagram control references
  • Type 'ref', then Ctrl-Shift-T - Move labels of all diagram control references, even those in nested diagrams
  • Select diagram objects, then press Ctrl-T - Move labels of selected objects (could be terminals, control refnums, constants, etc.)

What do you think?

Hi Darren

Don't know how I missed your reply (lucky for me I was trolling the group!) - so sorry for the delay.

The above sounds great however, maybe you should crack out the Alt key for this e.g.

Alt + Ctrl + T = All Objects (Contols, Indicators, Refs)

As it may get confusing having to type stuff - although the combo box allows endless expansion in the future?

Either way, having this ability would be a really cool enhancement.

Hey, I forgot about this thread too.  I remember running into trouble when trying to add "Alt" support to QDKS a while back...but I don't recall specifically what the issue was.  Also, I'll have a better chance getting an enhancement into 2012 if I don't have to modify Quick Drop itself, but just the plugin VI.  Hopefully I can find some time soon to add this in.

I just submitted into LabVIEW 2012 the following version of the Move Terminal Labels shortcut.  This one is saved in LabVIEW 2011.  Let me know what you think...it functions identically to the bulletted list of features I described above.
