Drive your FTC robot using a Wireless Playstation (PS2) controller.

Ever since I saw the first TETRIX demo at Nationals back in 2008, I couldn’t believe that the only way to drive the robot remotely was with a game controller plugged into a computer. It just didn’t seem reasonable for a mobile robot to NEED a full laptop computer as a driver station.

Ever since then, I’ve been looking for a handheld platform that could connect to the NXT via Bluetooth and send a suitable packet to be interpreted by LabVIEW. I thought my boat had come in when the latest software update on my iTouch enabled the “secret” Bluetooth interface, but Apple has deemed that it should only talk to “Apple Approved” devices.

When I finally discovered the PS2 adapter that mindsensors.com designed for the NXT, I was in heaven.

Why? Because there are lots of cheap wireless PS2 controllers out there.

The attached zip file contains a document describing the PS2 interface, a custom VI for interfacing to the PS2 receiver, and some sample robot programs.
