Equipment for digitizing 1000s of photos?

So I want to digitize all my parents photos but I don't want it to consume a month of my life. I also don't want to send the only copies we have to a service that scans them for us.

What is my next best option?

I've googled around for scanners with autofeeders, but most of the review sites are just amazon referral scams, so I was hoping someone here would tell me what worked for them.

How much worse are scans of photos vs. scans of negatives? I have negatives for some but not all photos.

I don't want to buy a $20,000 machine, but otherwise cost is not really a variable I care about optimizing for.
