Cancel during application or installer build that actually works

Status: Declined
Moved to CAR database. CAR#49271

There is a button at the bottom right hand side of the 'Build status' dialog labeled 'Cancel'.

Clicking it does absolutely nothing other than grey out the cancel button.

I would like to suggest a working cancel function.

I voted for this, but I agree with your point in the other thread - this is a bug, not something that needs to be considered as a new idea. It is documented behavior which is not functioning as expected.

My cancel button works (LV2010), but only while processing files. I think it's because there aren't very many stop-points in the build process. From what I can tell, there are 5 main steps:

Initialize Build

Process files

Compile

Save files

Build Application

Only during Process Files does the cancel button work quickly: it will stop after processing the current file. During Compile, the mouse is changed to the in-use icon, so we can't cancel there. During save, the cancel button doesn't stop the build process. It's like NI forgot to put a poll of the cancel button in the Save File loop.

@tst

Thanks for voting. I agree that it's a bug. I'm just having trouble convincing an NI employee in this thread here that a corrective action needs to be raised.

"Suggest it in the idea exchange" they said.

Didn't seem all that appropriate to me to add it here, but ok. I'll do as they suggested.

There has been a Corrective Action Request (CAR) filed for this behavior. While it is expected behavior, I agree that the expectation of a Cancel button being available is that it will actual cancel something. The CAR will bring this to R&D's attention and a decision will be made on the best way to move forward (add functionality to actual break out of the build process or change the cancel button to set better expectations on functionality).

It's been 10 years, and I'm sitting here wondering if I should kill LabVIEW or wait out the "cancellation that is no cancellation" process.  Hows about fixing this, NI?

Reminds me of the 'stop' button when loading a project.

Sure, LabVIEW stops working. That might be expected behavior too, but it's not my expectation...
