'Edit Palette Set' dialogs; It should be possible to get them back if they lose focus

I select Tools->Advanced->Edit Palette Set to edit the LabVIEW palettes. Now the two palettes ('Controls' and 'Functions') appear, but if they for any reason lose focus (if I minimize all windows, if I temporarily bring another window into focus, or often even if I just left-click click on the desktop), these two windows disappear and it's no longer possible to get them back. I can only see the LabVIEW splash screen, and the Save/Cancel dialog for the palettes (the latter I can't bring into focus).

I'll have to kill LabVIEW through the task manager to start over.

I think the palettes need a bit more work to get them to stay in focus when editing them. Note that this is when editing the palettes, not when using them.

Cheers,

Steen

I've had a similar problem where the Save screen gets hidden somehow. I thought it was a bug. Kudos to the fact that these screens, during Palette editing, need work.

You're probably right it should be categorized as a bug. Let's see if NI has some feedback on this.

What operating system are you using? And what version of LabVIEW? (For me, the palette windows return when I click back to LabVIEW).

I use Windows XP and LabVIEW 2009 SP1. I'm not sure if it was like I describe always, but it has definitely been a problem in several versions of LabVIEW. I can check in 2010 SP1 tomorrow. Cheers, Steen

MAX does the exact same thing with the add/remove software dialog for a real-time target. Don't ever minimize it or you can't get it back and have to kill it in task manager. It's been like that ever since I remember.

I can't reproduce this problem on an XP test machine with LabVIEW 2009. We should probably move this to the regular forums and try to diagnose your system.

If by "splash screen" you mean the Getting Started window, then something is wrong as soon as you enter the palette editor. You shouldn't see the GSW once you're in the palette editor.

Some questions to help us diagnose this...

  1. Is the behavior the same if you open a blank VI before entering the Palette Editor?
  2. Is the behavior the same if you exit, delete (or rename) your INI file, and relaunch LabVIEW?
  3. Do you have any toolkits or modules installed?

You're right if what I describe isn't intended behaviour. Can you move the entire thread to the ordinary forums? The only problem is that I often don't get any reponse in those forums...

On my LV 2009 SP1 (that exhibits this problem) I have the FPGA, Real-Time and Vision Development modules installed. And several toolkits: DB connectivity, Internet toolkit, PID & Fuzzy logic, Report generation, SIT, Unit test framework, VI analyzer, RT and Desktop execution trace toolkits, as well as several other applications (Switch executive, Requirements gateway, TestStand in a couple of versions...).

It doesn't change anything if I temporarily remove the LabVIEW.ini, but it behaves correctly if I open a blank VI first! Knowing this is a usable workaround for me. I think it'll take a long time finding the setting in my system that does the damage. And I don't look forward to the next logical step; reinstall of my 2009 SP1 toolchain Smiley Wink

My LabVIEW 2010 SP1 install (with more modules installed than my LV 2009 SP1) does as you describe when editing the palettes, even without a blank VI opened first; the LV splash screen disappear, and the palettes move in and out of focus with the LV instance as any other VI.
