Selecting nested objects

There needs to be a better way to select nested objects.  Have you ever tried to select a string within a cluster within an array?

How about the default selection being the top level object.  Right-click to select the first nested objects.  Then Right-click on down through the hierarchy.

Have you tried holding down the control key while using the mouse? It changes the autotool behavior to "the second most useful tool". I find this aids selection. (Not saying the idea is a bad one, just noting this alternate workaround exists for those who happen to know about it.)

I don't use the autotool because it frustrates me to no end.
