Separate Banner from VI icon

Status: New

There was an interesting discussion going on some time ago:

http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW-Idea-Exchange/Create-smaller-banner-for-libraries/idi-p/959345

Bottom line: The banners use up too much of the available VI icon space

So why don't add an separate banner area above the actual VI icon? Please see below:

This was primarily inspired by a discussion at this years VIP in Germany. Very often, the banner is used to display some information about the company (e.g. Logo) or the owning library (e.g. third party Hardware). In our company, we mark project specific VIs with the project number (eg. E007-12).

Because the Icon space is very limited, a special "information area" (with no possibility of placing terminals) would make the design of icons more comfortable. The new banner should be made visible with the context menu, just like the VI label

While I agree with your concern about the banner taking up too much space, I'm more concerned about size of the subVI icon growing. For this reason, I'm against the Idea.

Now, if the banner was part of something like http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW-Idea-Exchange/Quick-subVI-configuration-and-overview-from-caller-BD/..., where information is overlayed when an option is toggled or a hotkey is pressed, then I'd be more on board with this.

The concept of a VI with a larger icon... this is very cool. To put this into perspective; Linus Torvalds recently suggested 2560x1600 become the standard resolution -- 32x32px represents 0.025% of this area. Sure, we're not there today, but +1 for this forward-looking idea. The aspect ratio of the concept art looks awesome and promising.

Stretch Icons vertically.

I'm for it.

But please don't expand the connector pane with it.....

I've given it kudos. Ideally, make it an option on a per icon or global basis.
