If a control becomes disabled or disabled an creyed out, there is no possibility to copy text out of the control. It would be nice to to add a 4rd value "read only", so that the control has the behaviour of an indicator. So the User can copy parts of a String or number ot of the element.

Use an indicator instead of a control to get that functionality. That's exactly what indicators are for.

Users with different permission levels should be presented different user interfaces to the same business logic. They shouldn't see the same front panel at all. I did a presentation at NIWeek this year on exactly that topic.

If you must do it in the same VI (which is a bad idea, let me reiterate), you should have a control and an indicator and make the appropriate one visible (using the Visible property) as needed.
