Can you use Labview to control an encoder connected to a stepper motor?

Hello we are trying to use an encoder to determine position of a linear actuator. Is there a specific type of encoder we should get? Research suggests to use a quadrature encoder. We want to connect it to a drive (IDEA drive (PCM4826E-K)). If so, how do we connect the encoder to the stepper motor? And can we use LabView in conjunction with the Encoder?

Hi Shabashaba,

Is there a specific type of encoder we should get?

You can use any encoder as long as it is supported by your motor driver and fulfills your requirements…

Research suggests to use a quadrature encoder.

They offer high resolution and detection of the direction of movement…

We want to connect it to a drive (IDEA drive (PCM4826E-K)).

As is written in the manual of your motor driver, I guess…

If so, how do we connect the encoder to the stepper motor?

Usually you use some screws to connect the encoder to your motor…

(How to connect the encoder to a shaft is written in the encoder manual.)

And can we use LabView in conjunction with the Encoder?

Sure - as they aren't related at all!

Only the motor driver needs to know about the encoder…

Best regards,
GerdW

Hi so we got a SEN0230 encoder and an IDEA drive from Amatek which is a smart drive and we are having a hard time getting them to work together. Anyone have any ideas on how to do that?

Hi Shabashaba,

did you read the manuals for both devices?

I just looked up both: IDEA and SEN0230.

Read the "connection diagrams" for IDEA and page 2 of the encoder datasheet to get all the information you need!

(Why did you create a new thread instead of sticking with your older one?)

Best regards,
GerdW

Hi yes sorry I misworded my question. I know how to connect them but I am having trouble getting the encoder to track the movement of the linear actuator's position

Hi Shaba,

so you got a rotary encoder and you want to track linear movement?

I guess you need some kind of transmission…

Best regards,
GerdW
