Hello, I would like to ask if an NI CompactDAQ could work without choosing any controller. My question is based on the idea that instead of using a simple usb C Series module carrier you can go on with a NI cDAQ 9171 one slot which is simply connected with a pc. So, why does the NI CompactDAQ chassis - which is an extension of the one slot- need a controller?
Thanks

NI CompactDAQ does work without a controller. NI has both USB and ethernet options in multiple slot configurations (8, 4, and 1).
You can see all the options here: http://sine.ni.com/np/app/main/p/ap/cdaqchss/lang/en/pg/1/sn/n25:chassis,n24:cDAQ/
Only the NI-9138 and the NI-9139 work without being tethered to a PC (they contain their own computers).
CompactRIO on the other hand (similar looking chassis, same C-Series IO modules) normally has a controller that runs a real-time operating system and a programmable FPGA on the backplane.
I hope this helps,
