Add infos for updates

When you have an update available for a package, you cannot access the details of the package. So you don't have access to the detils of the update. You must manually find the corresponding package in the product view and select the version to install to have access to the details.

At least a way to access to the product details page from the available update page.

HI MaximeR,

Thanks you for the idea. I have a could questions to help make sure I fully understand what you're interested in:

  1. Which details about the package would you be interested in seeing?
  2. How would you use these details? For example, would they help you determine whether or not to install the update?

Thanks!

Hi Maxime, Aaron,

For me, it would be nice to be able to see what version I'm updating from, as well as to. It's not critical but might be useful for checking that I have the right mental model of what is going to be upgraded (or just a quick proxy for how much might have changed).

hello,

Thanks for considering my idea. Sorry, I didn't recieved notification for your message.

Yes My idea is to provide to user a way to understand what he will have when installing this update. We can image to have access to a "Readme" with description of the new functionnality. We already can put some documentation on package, but after it's installed you have no infos.

Another point is that for an update, we don't have the info of the current package, we only know the last update available. If the update broke something, it can help debugging. Again, if you have many version of difference, you can ask yourself if it's gonna be a major or a minor update.

I'm considering this more to deploy software in a big company with differente sites worldwide. We provide a framework and each site can have a different schedule to deploy updates. having more informations in the package can make people more autonomus to know if a particular update can fix a bug for example if we place this inside the package documentation. It's better than maintening a dedicated site to explain the new functionnalities.

in the old NI Update Service, informations of the update was available :

I didn't find a way also to provide a solution to give the user to install a specific version of the same package. You provide this in the product page :

Can we create this kind of page inside NIPKG without publishing it on NI Tools Network ?

it can be good to have access to this page from the list of updates. Here we have information on product with the details tab.

in VI package Manager, it was possible for all package.

This is maybe antoher subject, but it's link.

Thanks again.

Sorry, I just found that we can select the version in the package tab, but I don't know for the update tab.
