sine wave applied and measured current

Hello to everyone, thanks in advanced for what you could tell me.

I am planning to make a basic hardware setup to apply a AC voltage (ex. sine)

to a two terminal device with an DC offset, and simultaneously I need to measure the AC current.

I know SMUs apply voltage and measure current, but they work in DC.

DMM (Digital multimeter) should be read currents, but it is not clear to me how to use for apply the bias.

Sorry if too trivial for you.

Thank you ....Glenn.

What I have done in the past is use an Arbitrary Waveform Generator to supply the voltage waveform and then a current sense resistor with a digitizing DMM to measure the current.

Thank you for your reply.

In summary, I can use a DMM, for example this one?

this board connected to my 2 terminals, and a generic waveform generator to apply the bias....correct? thank you ! Glenn

If you already have a PXI-4071, then it will work fine.  If buying new, I would go with a PXIe-4081 (the PXI-4071 is on its way out).

I am do not know what device you are trying to test.  But for measuring current, I use a small resistor (like a 1 Ohm) and measure the voltage drop across it to get my current (I = V/R).

Currently I have nothing 🙂 I am going to buy all the setup.

The board PXIe-4081 looks good for what I need: my devices in basic are transistors...I would apply the ac bias at the gate and measure ac current at the drain...

I just try also to look for the wavefor generator (NI PXIe-5451?)
https://www.ni.com/en-us/shop/model/pxie-5451.html

but it is so expensive that probably is too advanced for what I have to do...

Thanks, Glenn
