The NIWeek Communty had the priviledge to sit down with some of the award-winning paper authors after the 2010 Graphical System Design Achievement Awards (GSDAA). Fourteen finalists' papers competed in seven application categories - Academic Research and Education, Machine Monitoring and Control, Medical Device Design and Development, Prototype and Validation Test, Robotics, Test and Measurement, and Wireless Monitoring. The finalists were also considered for four featured awards - Green Engineering, Editors' Choice, Humanitarian, and 2010 Customer Application of the Year.

Dr. Dennis Hong, associate professor at Virginia Tech and director of RoMeLa, and Greg Jannaman were named winners of the Robotics category and the 2010 Customer Application of the Year for their application, Building a Semiautonomous Vehicle Driven by the Visually Impaired with NI LabVIEW and CompactRIO.

Dr. Hong gave us a brief description of his application and shared his inspiration for the project as well as a few things to look forward to from Virginia Tech:

We were also lucky enough to run into the Student Design Showcase winners from the University of Colorado. This team was awarded for developing and demonstrating an acoustic network system capable of relaying and executing mission plans from an operator to an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) via underwater transmission, or the CUBOAT project.

The winners told us how it felt to win the award and about their favorite part of the GSDAA ceremony:

And Felipe Echevveri from Biorep Technologies, winner of the Humanitarian of the Year Award for his application on the Biorep Perifusion system that automates cell secretion analysis, told us why he loves being an engineer:
