Clean Up Options Preview- LabVIEW

Status: New

I find the clean up button in LabVIEW really useful.

However it does not always clean up in a way that I want - moving code around, compacting too much in some place etc.

This can be improved by playing around with the clean up options but that way requires a lot of trial and error before it is just right.

What would be great is if LabVIEW gave me a series of mini preview windows of what the cleaned up code could look like. Each window would show a different style. i.e. one window might prioritise making the code compact so that it fits onto one screen, another might prioritise making the code easy to follow and understand etc etc.

Take a look at the attached file and you'll see what I mean.

This would make a good paring with another idea to tell LV what clean VIs look like. You would ask for cleaning of the diagram. LV would present you with various cleaning options. You'd pick one. Over time, if you picked consistently, LV would stop showing you the options and just clean without prompting. If you didn't like any of the options, you could select one and adjust it, thus giving feedback to LV about how it should adjust its cleaning algorithm.

The UI for viewing 3 different diagrams might be hard to manage -- some diagrams take the full screen or more, particularly the ones most in need of cleanup. On the other hand, I've seen graphics programs handle showing an image and a preview of some filter applied to the image side-by-side by showing two smaller regions and allowing the user to pan around in the preview image. Perhaps something like that would work for LV as well.
