3rd Party Hardware Not Shown in MAX

Solved!
Go to solution

I have a PXI-1042 chassis with a PXI-8106RT Controller running LabView RT 8.6.1.  The chassis is populated with a number of NI PXI cards.  I have written the software to control these using LabWindows/CVI 9.0.1.

I have installed a North Atlantic Industries cPCI 75DS2 (http://www.naii.com/3U-cPCI-D-S-and-DLV/P222) but cannot see the device in MAX.  I have installed the following to the PXI system (into c:/ni-rt/system):

These 3 driver files were provided by North Atlantic Industries:

75DS2.inf

75DS2.ini

na75DS2_RT.dll

These 4 files are from my installation of the NI software:

cvi_lvrt.dll (9.0.1.375)

ivi_support_c.dll (3.1.0.49152)

ivi_support_f.dll (3.1.0.49152)

ivi.dll (3.2.1.49152)

When I turn the system on, the 75DS2 board is not shown up in MAX (version 4.7.1f8) under Devices and Interfaces (as per all the other devices).  The slot where it is located just says "Unknown/Empty".  I have swapped the 75DS2 into other slots but the same thing happens.  I have also used a second 75DS2 board, again it is not recognized in MAX.

On the machine, I have the following relevant NI software installed:

LabVIEW Real-Time 8.6.1

LabWindows/CVI Run-Time Engine for RT 9.0.0 NI-VISA 4.4

An interesting point is that if I set the chassis to be unidentified in MAX, then a list of devices is shown when you select "Chassis (Unidentified)" with the following format "PXI11::11::INSTR (PXI6259)" and the 75DS2 is shown here ("PXI11::10::INSTR (na75ds2)").  These devices are none selectable.  Why are these devices shown in this way?  And why do they disappear when you identify the chassis?

Am I missing a crucial step which allows the system to correctly detect the 3rd party hardware and display the information correctly in MAX?

I am the engineer looking into this problem, as I understand you have NI and 3rd party hardware, the NI devices show up in MAX until you add the 3rd party device, this then means that you cannot see your device in the measurement and automation explorer.

Following these steps will narrow down the issue if it doesn't solve the issue.

1) I notice that North Atlantic Industries has some supporting files for your device, I wanted to ask if you have installed these yet? I am sure you have the right software, but I wanted to confirm these factors now before we spend too much time troubleshooting other aspects.
2) Us this article to check you have the recommended set up: PXI Third-Party Products: http://www.ni.com/pxi/third_party_links.htm
3) Have you downloaded the most recent version of NI VISA? http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/2251/lang/en
4) This link talks about a specific 3rd party device, but it may help you with your system. http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/3B3626D9C1F999218625694200791AD7?OpenDocument
